Today, a report to Liverpool City Council’s cabinet will ask for approval for a public consultation on plans to develop Liverpool’s historic Commercial District into a world-class business location.
This will allow people of the city to share their views on the plans, which will be showcased in a vision document on the area, which covers 40 acres of Liverpool city centre. According to the latest Commercial Office Market Review, produced in partnership by Liverpool BID Company and Professional Liverpool, an extra 582,084 sq ft of office space was occupied in the CBD area in 2018.
That’s significant growth within limited space and action is needed to ensure we can accommodate future growth and increase the area’s economic potential. In particular, there is urgent need for more Grade A office space in the Commercial District.
The plan seeks to boost the economic potential of the CBD by enhancing existing conditions to attract and retain businesses, by identifying opportunities to improve the public realm and underused buildings, as well as creating thousands of new jobs.
Speaking of the consultation, Adam Mokhtar, Director at ArchiPhonic said: “This comes at a time when all eyes are on the Liverpool City Region and it is a huge opportunity for us to quash the preconceptions that stick with the city from many years ago.
“The Commercial District plans are principally about a vision for the future and how we have only just started our journey. Rather than just The Beatles, bars and shopping, we are being recognised as an economic hub with significant potential and attracting investors from all over the world.
“The city region has a rich and vibrant history, enviable views and its proximity to areas of outstanding natural beauty means that we have so much to offer to those who choose to do business here.
“However, we have experienced intense growth in our city centre with limited space and this has, therefore, has created a necessity to only include those aspects which seek to complement the welcoming feel.
“The creation of the new Commercial District will provide an excellent location for companies – who may otherwise consider neighbouring cities – an opportunity to gain all the benefits our city has to offer and therefore further add to the ambition of our community.
This is an amazing period of growth and we will no doubt look back at this time in ten years and be able to say, ‘I was there when this was just a dream…’ “
